Former Australian Festival Association Leader Becomes Sydney's Deputy Mayor
Olly Arkins, who recently stepped down as CEO of the Australian Festival Association, has been unanimously elected as deputy lord mayor of Sydney. Arkins, the first openly trans person in the role, cited goals including affordable housing and support for the city's LGBTQIA+ community. She previously served on the City of Sydney Council and advocated for entertainment precincts and major events like Mardi Gras.
Arkins, who led the Australian Festival Association for five years until last month, was elected to the City of Sydney Council in 2024. She now holds the deputy lord mayor role, adding to her positions as deputy chair of the cultural, creative and nightlife committee and co-chair of the creative and nightlife advisory panel. She also serves on the board of Local Government NSW.
Her council priorities include affordable housing, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, and backing events like Mardi Gras and Yabun. During her AFA tenure, she helped rewrite NSW's Music Festivals Act, secured improved OneMusic licensing terms, and pushed for drug-checking services at festivals in two states. She also advocated for increased federal Revive Live funding for festivals.
