Vodafone and Ericsson test AI noise cancellation and live translation on calls

Vodafone and Ericsson successfully trialed two AI-powered voice services: real-time noise cancellation and live language translation, delivered through the mobile network without needing apps or new handsets. The trial is part of their "Core Network of the Future" program, integrating Vodafone's AI engines with Ericsson's IMS. The services aim to improve call quality and enable cross-language communication for businesses.
The trial pairs Vodafone's application server and AI engines with Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem, enabling both features to function through the network itself. Users therefore gain access to noise cancellation and translation without downloading software or upgrading their devices. The noise cancellation service identifies and suppresses background sounds during calls, potentially aiding people in loud workplaces or transit settings. The translation feature allows real-time conversation between speakers of different languages, which could assist businesses engaging with customers, suppliers, or colleagues across language barriers. Both services emerged from the companies' "Core Network of the Future" programme, which explores embedding AI directly into telecom infrastructure.
These network-native AI services could remove two common communication barriers: ambient noise and language differences. Business users may find cross-border calls more productive, while consumers in noisy settings could enjoy clearer conversations. However, because the technology depends on carrier infrastructure, adoption may be limited to regions where operators deploy it, potentially widening connectivity gaps. Privacy considerations around AI processing of live calls may also warrant attention as such services become more widespread.
