Washington pledges $27 million to help repatriate deported Ukrainian children
The U.S. State Department announced $27 million in funding to identify, return, and reintegrate Ukrainian children forcibly deported to Russia. Ukraine's Justice Ministry has confirmed over 20,600 such cases, though officials estimate the true number could be far higher. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked Washington, saying the funds would support rehabilitation and accountability for Russia.
The funding announcement came during UN General Assembly proceedings, with $12 million already being granted to an implementing program and $15 million authorized for a second organization later this year. Ukraine's Justice Ministry has confirmed 20,610 deportation cases as of September 2026, though officials believe the actual figure may be dramatically higher.
The pledge marks a shift from earlier Trump administration actions, which cut funding to Yale's Ukraine Conflict Observatory that tracked child abductions. First Lady Melania Trump has since advocated for displaced children, including writing to Putin in August 2025. The ICC issued arrest warrants in 2023 for Putin and Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova over the abductions.
This funding could help reunite families and provide rehabilitation for children who have endured forced transfer, potentially setting a precedent for international accountability. With confirmed cases exceeding 20,000 and estimates far higher, the impact may be limited relative to need, but the U.S. commitment could encourage other nations to contribute. The genocide designation and ICC involvement may shape how future war crimes involving children are addressed globally.
