BT Enables Nationwide Police Drone Operations on UK Railways
British Transport Police will use drones connected via BT's Drone SIM and EE mobile network for routine Beyond Visual Line of Sight operations across the UK's rail network. The drones, launched from seven locations, provide real-time aerial intelligence to speed up incident response and reduce the need for in-person investigations. The force plans to expand to 14 drone-in-a-box sites within two years.
The drone programme builds on BT's longer-term investment in connected aerial technology, including Project Skyway, a planned 165-mile BVLOS corridor between the Midlands and Southeast. BT previously trialled drone delivery of medical supplies, including the UK's first overland BVLOS flight in 2023.
The deployment responds to a persistent safety challenge: trespass incidents on the rail network numbered over 19,300 in 2023/2024, roughly one every half hour. Currently these require costly in-person staff visits. The CAA's Future of Flight roadmap, published last year, aims to enable routine BVLOS operations by 2027, and this police deployment represents an early practical application of that framework.
This deployment could reshape how public safety agencies respond to incidents across large infrastructure networks. If successful, routine BVLOS drone operations may reduce response times and lower costs for rail policing, potentially influencing other forces and sectors to adopt similar models. However, expanded drone surveillance may raise privacy considerations for the public, and the programme's expansion to 14 sites within two years could signal a broader shift toward automated aerial monitoring in everyday policing.
