European HealthTech Funding Turns Toward Clinical Infrastructure
European healthtech funding is shifting away from consumer wellness toward clinical infrastructure, computational biology, and specialized diagnostics. Health systems are adopting domain-specific AI tools, including ambient documentation and imaging, while regulators work to align the EU AI Act with MDR/IVDR and reduce compliance bottlenecks. Hospitals in Germany, the UK, and the Nordics are choosing specialized AI for coding, triage, and cardiology imaging over general models. Meanwhile, MedTech Europe and regulators are working on EU AI Act and MDR/IVDR alignment, sandboxes, and the MHRA’s reciprocal approval route.
The move toward care-delivery infrastructure could ease clinician documentation burdens and support faster triage or imaging review, potentially benefiting patients and hospital staff. It may also concentrate influence among vendors able to meet complex regulatory and local-data-control demands, affecting smaller innovators. Harmonized oversight could speed access to useful tools, while safety, equity, and local control remain considerations for health systems and the public.
