CoinMarketCap buys Coinglass to expand crypto derivatives data reach

CoinMarketCap has acquired Coinglass for an undisclosed sum, adding derivatives data such as liquidations, open interest and funding rates. Coinglass covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments, with over five million monthly users. The deal has raised concerns because CoinMarketCap is owned by Binance, though Coinglass says it remains independent for now.
CoinMarketCap, which reports roughly 115 million monthly visitors, has bought Coinglass for an undisclosed amount. Coinglass supplies derivatives metrics including liquidations, open interest, funding rates, long/short positioning and options, spanning 28 exchanges and over 2,500 instruments. It also has more than five million monthly users and 10,000 API customers.
The acquisition links CoinMarketCap, owned by Binance, with a key derivatives-data source. Coinglass says it remains independent for now, while its data is expected to be folded into CoinMarketCap’s services over time. Some traders are already discussing alternatives such as Glassnode, CryptoQuant, Token Terminal, Goldsky, ExoCharts and Quantower.
The deal may affect crypto traders, analysts, and institutions that rely on derivatives data. If a Binance-owned platform controls more market-risk information, some users could question perceived independence, potentially shifting traffic to alternatives. Greater integration might simplify research for casual users, but concentration of sensitive data could raise transparency and trust concerns. Regulators and market observers may pay closer attention to data ownership in crypto.
