KPI Green Energy Expands with Half-Gigawatt Wind Acquisition in Gujarat
KPI Green Energy will purchase a 507.9 MW operational wind power portfolio in Gujarat from Saudi-based Alfanar Group for approximately 24.1 billion Indian rupees, adding substantial capacity to its renewable energy holdings. The acquired assets, which include 301.4 MW from Alfanar Energy and 206.5 MW from Netra Wind, benefit from long-term power contracts with India's SECI and are expected to remain productive for an average of 21 years. The transaction, anticipated to complete by February 2027, will increase KPI Green's combined operational and development capacity to around 1.6 GW.
KPI Green Energy is significantly expanding its renewable portfolio through this acquisition of operational wind assets in Gujarat. The purchase includes facilities from two entities within the Alfanar Group, a Saudi Arabian energy company, with the combined capacity representing a major addition to the Indian firm's existing projects. The acquired wind farms benefit from established long-term contracts with India's Solar Energy Corporation, providing revenue stability and suggesting these are mature, well-performing assets.
The transaction values the wind portfolio at approximately 48 million rupees per megawatt of capacity. The financing structure indicates substantial existing debt obligations tied to these projects, which KPI Green will assume as part of the acquisition. With an expected completion date in early 2027, this deal follows KPI Green's September announcement of plans for a hybrid wind-solar project, indicating an aggressive expansion strategy in Gujarat's renewable energy sector.
This acquisition may accelerate India's renewable energy capacity additions while potentially improving operational efficiency through consolidated management of existing assets. Investors and energy analysts could view the transaction as a positive indicator of the sector's maturity and profitability. For regional energy supply, the projects' extended productive lifespan suggests sustained renewable generation capacity. However, the deal's impact on local employment, energy pricing for consumers, and competition within India's renewable sector would depend on factors not detailed in this announcement.
