Major battery storage project in Texas secures full financing ahead of 2027 launch
Linea Energy has completed financing for a 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage facility in Upton County, Texas, with construction-to-term loans and equity commitments from D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments. The Mesa View project is expected to begin operations in 2027 and will supply 250 MW of dispatchable power to the Texas electricity market. The facility joins Linea Energy's growing portfolio of renewable energy projects, including a previously financed solar installation in Michigan.
Linea Energy has secured complete funding for its Mesa View battery storage facility through a combination of debt instruments and equity backing from D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments. The financing structure includes construction-to-term debt, tax equity bridge financing, and credit facilities, with Norddeutsche Landesbank serving as lead arranger and Texas Capital as a syndicate lender. The 250 MW facility will store enough energy to supply continuous power output at that capacity for two hours once it becomes operational.
This project represents Linea Energy's expansion into utility-scale energy storage while simultaneously advancing its renewable portfolio. The company recently completed a parallel financing milestone for its Watertown solar installation in Michigan, which raised $457 million in combined debt and tax equity commitments. Both projects underscore the financing mechanisms now available for renewable energy infrastructure across different technologies and regions.
Battery storage projects could play an important role in Texas's grid reliability by providing dispatchable power that balances intermittent renewable generation. The Mesa View facility may help grid operators meet peak demand periods without fossil fuel generation. Large-scale storage deployment could affect electricity costs and market dynamics in ERCOT territory, though impacts may vary depending on operational patterns and market conditions. Project financing success may also signal investor confidence in energy storage as a maturing asset class.
