Two teenagers killed by explosive device in Sumy region field

Two 14-year-old boys were killed in Sumy Oblast's Konotop district on Oct. 7 after an explosive device went off in a field, according to the regional governor. The area lies near the Russian border and is exposed to frequent attacks, while mines and unexploded munitions remain a widespread danger. Ukraine has become one of the world's most heavily mined countries since Russia's full-scale invasion.
The governor of Sumy Oblast, Oleh Hryhorov, said the two boys came across the device in a field in Konotop district. It exploded, and both died at the site from serious wounds. Konotop sits roughly 65 kilometers from Russia's border, in a region that faces near-daily strikes.
Hryhorov did not identify the device. Across Ukraine, mines and unexploded munitions remain a broad hazard; after five years of full-scale invasion, as much as a quarter of the country is contaminated, and hundreds of civilians have been killed by ordnance since February 2022.
