Buterin Says Pump.fun Pushes Retail Traders Toward Gambling
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has argued that Pump.fun has harmed the crypto sector since launching in 2024. He said the platform encourages new retail users to speculate on tokens with limited real-world utility rather than invest. Buterin also compared its mechanics to a gambling device, where repeated trading can drain participants' funds while the platform profits.
Buterin’s critique was relayed through Maverick’s X post, which tied his concerns to Pump.fun’s 2024 debut. The Solana-based service lets people issue memecoins with minimal technical know-how, making token creation far easier than traditional crypto project deployment.
He reportedly described the platform’s loop as slot-machine-like: users keep clicking and trading until their money runs out, while the platform gains from the activity. The remarks also raise a wider question about whether memecoins introduce newcomers to crypto or mainly train them in rapid speculation.
If Buterin’s view gains traction, it could shape how newcomers and regulators perceive memecoin platforms, potentially affecting retail investors’ risk awareness and the crypto sector’s public image. Platforms may face greater scrutiny over design features that encourage repeated trading. However, the actual impact remains uncertain, since memecoins may still serve as a starting point for some users while exposing others to losses.
