Mali and Russian Forces Give Details of Kidal Recapture Operation

Russia’s Africa Corps said a weeklong offensive from October 1 to 7 ended with the recapture of Kidal in northern Mali. The operation involved Malian troops, Russian personnel, and the Tuareg-led GATIA and MSA, with forces moving more than 450 kilometers from Gao under air cover. The separatist FLA said it withdrew from Kidal to preserve its strength, and Mali’s government reported that its forces had entered the city.
The Africa Corps said the offensive lasted from 1 to 7 October. Malian troops and Russian personnel, alongside GATIA and MSA, moved over 450 km from Gao toward Kidal across mined terrain, securing settlements en route. Aircraft from both countries struck positions near Kidal and rear sites in Abeïbara, Tin-Essako, Talahandak, Tinzaouaten and Tessalit.
The FLA said it left Kidal in a deliberate, provisional pullback to protect its strength, citing intensified air operations and no direct combat inside the city. Bamako said its forces entered and reinforced Kidal. The city had fallen in April to the FLA and JNIM, an al-Qaeda affiliate, in an offensive that killed Mali’s defense minister. Mali had retaken Kidal in November 2023.
The recapture may alter daily security for Kidal residents, who could face continued clearance of mines and unexploded ordnance. It may strengthen Bamako’s administrative reach in the north, while Tuareg separatist networks and allied groups could regroup or shift tactics. Humanitarian access and civilian safety may improve if aid follows, but the wider insurgency could persist, affecting communities across northern Mali.
