Field Architecture, based in California, has completed its first project in Idaho: a Sun Valley residence called Three Barns. The scheme comprises three gabled volumes that echo regional agricultural buildings, with each rotated to respond to the site’s topography and to give different views and daylight.
Inside, the volumes separate bedrooms, a kitchen-and-dining entertaining zone, and an entry with main living room. Glass-walled connectors link them, so movement between spaces passes through open air. Three chimneys built from local stone mark the home, while existing meadow, drainage and natural benches remain part of the design.
Projects like Three Barns may influence how homeowners, architects, and builders in mountain regions approach site planning. By keeping drainage, meadow, and existing landforms, such designs could reduce visible grading and support local ecology, while offering residents varied light and views.
