Freitag Launches Refined Reference Bag Collection Made From Recycled Truck Tarps
Swiss bag maker Freitag has introduced a four-piece Reference collection that aims to elevate its recycled-truck-tarp aesthetic with cleaner, more refined shapes. The launch coincides with the 20th anniversary of its Zurich container-store flagship and a repair kiosk added in 2025. CEO Janine Weiz-Bühler said the new line demonstrates that upcycled materials can match traditional luxury craftsmanship.
Freitag began in 1993 when Markus and Daniel Freitag turned discarded truck tarps into bags. Its Zurich flagship, built from 19 stacked shipping containers, opened in 2006, gained permanent status in 2014, and marked its 20th anniversary this September. A repair kiosk joined it in 2025.
The four-piece Reference collection debuts Thursday. Freitag runs about 30 stores, mostly in Europe and Asia, plus some 200 retail partners and e-commerce. Its circular services include repair, rental, resale, and swaps. Reclaiming tarps costs around three times more than new material because they are collected across Europe, inspected, taken apart by hand, and cleaned.
The launch may reinforce demand for upcycled goods among design-conscious shoppers, potentially encouraging other brands to treat recycled materials as premium rather than niche. It could also support repair and resale ecosystems, benefiting consumers seeking durable bags and workers involved in collecting and processing tarps. However, higher material costs may keep prices out of reach for some, limiting broad accessibility. The story may shape perceptions that circular fashion can be elegant, though impact depends on adoption.
