Clearway breaks ground on 650 MW Missouri power project
Clearway Energy Group has secured financing and begun building the 650 MW Swan Energy Center in Bates County, Missouri. The $1.5 billion project has a 20-year power purchase agreement and is slated to enter commercial service in 2028. The company also noted prior 2026 developments, including an 800 MW Maine wind selection and a 199 MW Colorado battery storage project.
The Swan Energy Center is a 650 MW project in Bates County, Missouri. Its $1.5 billion cost is supported by a 20-year power purchase agreement, with commercial service planned for 2028. A bank group led by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, DNB Bank ASA, and National Australia Bank Limited provided financing. Clearway Energy, Inc. plans to invest after operations begin.
Clearway also reported two 2026 milestones: Maine regulators chose its 800 MW Aroostook County wind proposal, alongside an Avangrid high-voltage line to the New England grid. In Colorado, its 199 MW Spindle battery project reached financial close and construction, using Tesla systems for 398 MWh.
The Missouri project could affect local workers, landowners, ratepayers, and grid operators through construction jobs, tax revenue, and added generation. Its long-term contract may help an electricity buyer manage supply costs. Clearway’s Colorado battery could support peak demand and renewable integration, while Maine wind and transmission may influence New England power flows and host communities. Actual effects may depend on permitting, costs, and grid conditions.
