Scatec and EDF start building 900 MW Shadwan wind farm in Egypt
Scatec and EDF Power Solutions have begun construction on the 900 MW Shadwan onshore wind project in Egypt. The project carries a capital cost of $716 million and is expected to generate about 4 TWh of electricity each year. Scatec also signed a three-year, $150 million equity bridge loan with The Arab Energy Fund, with $50 million allocated to Shadwan and $100 million to the Energy Valley solar and battery storage project.
Scatec and EDF Power Solutions have started building the 900 MW Shadwan onshore wind farm in Egypt, a $716 million project expected to generate about 4 TWh annually. It will be built in phases, with the first reaching commercial operation by late 2027. Scatec will provide engineering, procurement and construction services.
Scatec also signed a three-year, $150 million equity bridge loan with The Arab Energy Fund: $50 million for Shadwan and $100 million for the 1,950 MW solar and 3,935 MWh battery Energy Valley project. Mandate letters with development finance institutions cover long-term non-recourse financing. In August 2026, Obelisk's second phase reached commercial operation, adding 564 MW of solar for 1.1 GW total with 100 MW/200 MWh storage.
Egypt's grid could gain a substantial low-carbon supply source, with roughly 4 TWh a year potentially displacing fossil generation and supporting reliability as demand grows. Local communities near the site may see construction jobs and related economic activity, though land use and turbine impacts could draw scrutiny. The financing structure, including development finance institutions, may signal continued lender confidence in Egyptian renewables. Ratepayers and businesses could benefit if added capacity helps ease supply constraints, though outcomes depend on grid readiness and how the phased build is delivered.
