Missile Startup’s New Mexico Plant Raises Safety Fears for Nearby Residents

Castelion, a defense technology startup founded by former SpaceX executives, is building a hypersonic missile production facility called Project Ranger in Rio Rancho Estates, New Mexico. Documents indicate the site could pose major fire and chemical hazards to nearby homes, some roughly 1,000 yards away. The company has not answered basic safety questions, and an assessment found that a fire could release hydrochloric acid gas while buildings are left to burn.
Castelion was launched in late 2022 by three former SpaceX executives. Its Project Ranger site in Rio Rancho Estates is described as a planned large hypersonic manufacturing campus, with completion targeted for year-end. Some nearby homes sit roughly 1,000 yards away.
Castelion has reached a $13 billion valuation and secured more than $500 million in US military contracts within 18 months. Its Blackbeard missile was initially listed at $384,000 per unit, though later Navy awards indicate a much higher per-missile cost.
Residents near the planned facility could face heightened anxiety about fire, chemical releases, and evacuation planning, while local officials may need to weigh industrial growth against community safety. The project may also shape how defense startups and regulators handle hazardous manufacturing near homes, potentially influencing public trust, property values, and future siting decisions. Workers and nearby schools or parks could be affected if emergency protocols remain unclear.
