Binance Ethereum Holdings Drop to Six-Month Low Amid Record Withdrawals
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that Binance's ETH holdings declined from 3.57 million to 3.47 million tokens over three days, roughly 11.5% below their August high. On October 6, the platform processed over 320,000 ETH withdrawal transactions, a record for the tracked measure. The shift came as Ethereum's price fell 11% and the wider crypto market suffered heavy selling.
CryptoQuant's Darkfost noted Binance's Ether balance slipped from 3.57 million to 3.47 million tokens within three days. That left reserves about 11.5% under August's roughly 3.92 million ETH peak, a six-month low, after a September drawdown. The exchange processed more than 320,000 ETH withdrawal transactions on October 6, a record for the metric, which counts transactions rather than coins moved. Earlier 2021 spikes were smaller.
The drop coincided with Ether losing 11% and its market value shrinking by $38 billion; altcoins collectively fell by over $110 billion. Darkfost suggested withdrawn ETH might be held longer, moved to self-custody, staked, or used for yield, though the data cannot confirm motives or destinations.
This shift may affect retail and institutional crypto users who rely on exchanges for liquidity and custody. If withdrawals reflect greater self-custody or staking, individuals could gain more control but also face added responsibility for securing keys. Reduced exchange reserves might influence market confidence, trading depth, and volatility, potentially affecting investors and crypto businesses. However, because transaction counts don't show amounts or motives, broader social consequences remain uncertain and may depend on whether the trend continues.
