Amazon's New Alexa Tablets Adopt Android and Google Play

Amazon introduced Alexa Tablet 8, 11, and 12 Pro models starting at $229.99, running Android with full Google Play access. The shift moves away from Fire OS and Amazon Appstore restrictions, letting users install mainstream Google apps. Alexa+ and On-Screen Intelligence are central to the strategy, and India is not among launch markets.
Amazon's new tablet family includes three models: the Alexa Tablet 8, 11, and 12 Pro. Their starting prices are $229.99, $329.99, and $499.99, while a Nanomatte 12 Pro begins at $549.99. Unlike earlier Fire devices that used Fire OS and Amazon's own app store, these run Android with Google Play, so common Google and streaming apps can be installed normally.
The 12 Pro has a 12-inch 120Hz screen and supports optional keyboard and pen accessories. Alexa+ and On-Screen Intelligence are built in; the latter is off unless users opt in, shows an indicator when active, and Live screen sharing remains user-controlled. India is not among the launch markets.
The shift may affect tablet buyers who want Google apps without workarounds, potentially making Amazon devices more attractive for work, school, and entertainment. App developers could reach more users through Google Play, while Amazon may deepen reliance on Alexa+ services. Privacy-minded users may weigh opt-in screen intelligence and visible indicators. Competitors could face added pressure in budget and midrange segments. India's exclusion may limit near-term impact there.
