Philadelphia officer fatally shot, second wounded in West Philadelphia

A Philadelphia police officer was killed and another wounded on Saturday after responding to a report of an armed man. Shane Seiber, a 40-year-old 10-year veteran, died; the other officer was hospitalized in stable condition after surgery. A suspect was taken into custody, and Pennsylvania’s governor ordered flags at half-mast.
Shane Seiber, 40, had served Philadelphia’s police force for a decade. He leaves a wife, a seven-year-old son, and a three-year-old daughter. The second officer was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and was stable after surgery, Commissioner Kevin Bethel said. A suspect was arrested; the Philadelphia Inquirer, citing law enforcement sources, named Eric Lewis, 35, a city water department employee.
The Officer Down Memorial Page counts Seiber as at least the 376th Philadelphia officer to die on duty since 1851, and the 129th killed by gunfire. Governor Josh Shapiro directed flags to be lowered to half-mast in his honor.
The killing could deepen grief and anxiety among Philadelphia officers and residents, particularly in West Philadelphia, while renewing attention to gun violence and officer safety. Seiber’s family may face lasting loss; the wounded officer and colleagues could experience physical and emotional recovery. The arrest may reassure some that a suspect is held, but the case could also intensify debates over public safety, policing, and firearms without resolving underlying tensions.
