Nvidia Explores Larger Investment or Buyout of Reflection AI

Nvidia is reportedly discussing a larger investment in Reflection AI or a possible acquisition of the open-source startup. The talks are early and could also result in an acqui-hire, where Nvidia hires staff and licenses technology instead of buying the company. Nvidia has already put $800 million into Reflection AI, which was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers and builds software-development automation tools.
Nvidia is reportedly weighing a deeper stake in Reflection AI or an outright purchase, according to the Financial Times. Talks remain preliminary and might end without a deal. Alternatives include a further cash injection or an acqui-hire, in which Nvidia would bring over staff and license the startup’s technology rather than buy it, potentially sidestepping a lengthy regulatory review.
Reflection AI, formed in 2024 by ex-DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, focuses on automating software development. Nvidia has already committed $800 million. The startup’s CEO said in April it was raising funds at a $25 billion pre-money valuation, and it recently introduced Beam, an open-weight model for coding and agentic tasks.
If Nvidia expands its role, advances in automated coding could reach more developers and businesses, potentially reshaping software jobs and skill demands. Reflection AI’s staff, users, and rivals may face greater uncertainty as ownership or licensing shifts. An acqui-hire could speed integration while drawing less regulatory scrutiny, possibly affecting competition and open-source access. The outcome may influence how quickly agentic coding tools spread and who controls them.
