Barcelona Art Show Highlights Ukrainians Missing Since Russian Invasion

An exhibition titled “Born by War” opened in central Barcelona on Oct. 5, organized by the International Commission on Missing Persons and the Ukrainian group UA HERITAGE. It uses visual art, posters, and workshops to draw attention to families whose relatives have gone missing because of Russia’s war in Ukraine and to build solidarity with Ukrainian communities.
The Barcelona display, titled “Born by War,” opened Oct. 5, 2026, at a central parish on La Rambla. It was organized by the International Commission on Missing Persons with UA HERITAGE and drew Ukrainian consular officials, city council representatives, and local community members.
Four Ukrainian women from Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Kyiv took part through UA HERITAGE; each has a husband or son unaccounted for since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The program combined visual art, posters, and workshops, while ICMP described its forensic and technical work with Ukrainian institutions.
The exhibition may help families of missing Ukrainians feel seen and connected to broader support networks in Spain. By bringing local officials, consular representatives, and Ukrainian residents together, it could strengthen community ties and keep attention on unresolved cases. For audiences unfamiliar with the war, the artistic format may make personal loss more accessible, potentially encouraging empathy and sustained interest. However, such cultural events are unlikely by themselves to change policy or resolve individual cases.
