GreenCo, AXIAN ink Zambian solar power deal for 200 MW plant
Africa GreenCo and AXIAN Group signed a power purchase agreement for the 200 MW Kudu solar project in Zambia. Once operational, the project is expected to generate about 530 GWh of electricity annually. Africa GreenCo will buy the plant's output and sell it to customers across the SAPP, while Standard Bank Group and Stanbic Bank Zambia will provide financial support as financing and construction preparations advance.
The Kudu agreement covers a 200 MW solar installation in Zambia, with anticipated yearly output of roughly 530 GWh. Africa GreenCo is set to take the plant’s electricity and market it to buyers across the SAPP. Standard Bank Group and Stanbic Bank Zambia are backing the effort as funding and construction arrangements progress.
Earlier in 2026, GreenCo also pursued a 50 MW solar photovoltaic venture with SafiriPower in Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo, targeting mining and industrial customers. Separately, GreenCo and Stanbic Bank Zambia signed an MoU under the ZamWatt programme to develop renewable projects, drawing on ZESCO’s grid, Stanbic’s financing skills, and GreenCo’s trading and operational experience.
If built, the Kudu plant may add solar electricity to Zambia and the wider SAPP, potentially improving supply reliability for businesses and households. Local workers and communities near the project could see construction jobs and related economic activity, though those effects may be temporary or uneven. Electricity buyers, including industrial and mining users, could benefit from more diverse supply. Financing support may signal confidence, but actual social benefits depend on implementation, grid access, and affordability.
