UN Rights Chief Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Airports

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi airports, including a strike on Riyadh's main airport. He said attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and called for investigations and accountability. Türk urged all parties to de-escalate to prevent further civilian suffering in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
Türk issued his condemnation on Monday. He pointed to several days of Houthi strikes on Saudi airports, including one at Riyadh’s main air hub. Those attacks killed and wounded dozens, among them Saudi citizens and foreign nationals.
He said targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure breaches international humanitarian law. He sought investigations and accountability for alleged violations by all sides. He noted the conflict’s civilian toll in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, warned continued fighting would deepen suffering, and urged de-escalation and greater care to protect civilians.
The condemnation could heighten international scrutiny of strikes affecting airports, travel, and civilian safety. People in Yemen and Saudi Arabia may face continued disruption, injury, or loss if hostilities persist. Foreign nationals transiting or working in the region could also be at risk. Accountability calls may shape diplomatic pressure, but the practical effect on civilian protection remains uncertain.
