Telecom sector sees new round of layoffs as firms restructure

Telecom operators and vendors have announced thousands of job cuts in recent months as they pursue cost reductions and restructuring. Telia plans to cut about 900 roles by 31 December, roughly 6.4% of its workforce, across its five main markets. Nokia is also reported to be planning 253 job cuts in Finland, following 121 reductions in the country earlier this year.
Telia's proposed reduction of roughly 900 positions would equal about 6.4% of its staff. As of 1 October, it had about 14,100 employees, spread across Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Estonia and a small number elsewhere. The cuts would touch all five main markets, with Finland and Sweden facing the largest losses.
Nokia is reportedly preparing 253 cuts in Finland, including at Espoo, Tampere and Oulu, after 121 earlier reductions there this year. Telefónica's German unit O2 announced 1,100 cuts and plans to shut 60 of about 800 stores. Vodafone and T-Mobile US were also named among firms announcing reductions.
The layoffs could bring uncertainty to thousands of telecom workers and their households, particularly in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Lithuania, Estonia and Germany. Local communities may feel reduced spending or fewer job opportunities. Telefónica's planned store closures may also affect customers who rely on in-person help. At the same time, the restructuring may allow companies to redirect resources toward efficiency, new technologies or competitive services, though the social effects will depend on how support and transitions are handled.
