UAE unveils asteroid lander for 2028 Emirates mission

The United Arab Emirates has presented a half-scale model of the lander for its Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, scheduled to launch from Japan in March 2028. The MBR Explorer spacecraft will use gravity assists from Venus, Earth, and Mars to visit six asteroids before deploying the lander to 269 Justitia by 2036. The lander is expected to impact the asteroid at high speed and not survive the touchdown.
The UAE displayed a half-size lander model in Abu Dhabi for its Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt. The craft will travel attached to MBR Explorer, launching from Japan in March 2028. Using Venus, Earth, and Mars flybys, it should pass six asteroids and reach 269 Justitia by 2036.
The lander will descend for two to three hours at 15–27 meters per second without braking, carrying two cameras. Its target, 269 Justitia, is about 50 kilometers wide and deep red, resembling icy Kuiper Belt objects. A flight-ready lander awaits transport to Colorado.
The mission may strengthen the UAE’s space workforce and research ties, giving engineers and scientists experience with deep-space systems. Its high-speed impact could yield data on asteroid composition, potentially informing planetary science and future resource discussions. Public attention may inspire students in STEM, while international partners and commercial suppliers could see new collaboration opportunities. These effects remain uncertain and depend on mission success and how results are shared.
