Tesla Keeps 8,430 BTC, Recording Over $710 Million in Unrealized Gains

As of October 13, Tesla held 8,430 bitcoins worth about $960 million on its balance sheet. The company first bought $1.5 billion worth in early 2021 and later sold portions during 2021 and after the 2022 market turmoil. Its remaining holdings have produced an unrealized gain of more than $710 million over four years.
Tesla’s disclosed Bitcoin position dates to a February 2021 announcement of a $1.5 billion purchase. That stake briefly rose above $2 billion and reached roughly $2.5 billion before the company began reducing it.
During 2021, Tesla sold 4,670 BTC, then made further disposals after the May 2022 LUNA collapse. Since 2022, its reserve has stayed near 8,430 BTC. Arkham data cited on October 13 put that remaining amount near $960 million, versus an initial value of about $250 million, implying paper gains above $710 million.
Tesla’s continued Bitcoin holding may influence other public companies weighing digital assets for treasury reserves. It could affect shareholders through earnings volatility tied to crypto prices, and may shape retail investor sentiment. Because Bitcoin remains volatile, such exposure could amplify balance-sheet swings, potentially influencing how institutions and the public view crypto’s role in mainstream finance.
