Houthi Advances in Southwest Yemen Put Taiz and Bab al-Mandab Forces Under Pressure

Houthi forces advanced on several fronts in southwestern Yemen on October 13, reaching Taiz’s western entrance and capturing the al-Hangar checkpoint. They also pushed south of Taiz and cleared areas in western Lahj province, increasing pressure on Saudi-backed units near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The report says continued Houthi gains could isolate government-aligned forces by cutting their reinforcement and retreat routes.
On October 13, Houthi fighters reportedly moved onto several southwestern fronts. They reached Taiz’s western gateway and took the al-Hangar checkpoint, while also clearing Anbian and Wateer south of the city and nearby approach routes.
In western Lahj, Houthi forces reportedly cleared al-Sharjan, al-Ka’ala, Harazu, and al-Khabakhib. This followed their October 4 capture of Turbah, south of Taiz, which had already disrupted most government-held supply lines. The combined advances increase pressure on Saudi-backed units, including the Southern Giants Brigades, near Bab al-Mandab.
If Houthi gains continue, civilians around Taiz and western Lahj could face greater disruption, as fighting near roads may limit movement, food, fuel, and medical access. Forces near Bab al-Mandab may find reinforcement and withdrawal harder, potentially shifting local security. Because the strait is a key maritime route, any prolonged instability could also affect shipping and trade, though the immediate impact would likely fall first on nearby communities and displaced families.
