Eskom opens qualification round for 6 GW clean energy programme
Eskom Holdings has launched a request-for-qualification process to select renewable energy partners for the first phase of its Eskom Green programme, covering up to 6 GW of utility-scale renewable energy and storage. The programme includes solar PV, battery energy storage, wind and other technologies, with Eskom contributing at least 2 GW of solar PV and 1 GW/4 GWh of BESS. Selected partners would work with Eskom for five years on co-development, financing and implementation, with projects likely held in special purpose vehicles and financed mainly through limited- or non-recourse project financing.
Eskom's request for qualification opens a multi-year procurement, building a roster of pre-qualified firms that may later be invited to bid on individual projects. The utility intends to contribute at least 2 GW of solar PV and 1 GW/4 GWh of battery storage, which partners could combine with their own developments.
Earmarked Eskom sites differ in readiness, with land, environmental approvals and grid access at varying stages. Projects are expected to be held in separate special purpose vehicles and financed mainly through limited- or non-recourse arrangements, with structures and funding settled project by project.
South Africa's grid constraints and heavy coal reliance mean added renewable capacity could influence supply reliability and, over time, electricity pricing for households and businesses. Communities near generation sites may see construction jobs and land-use changes, while developers and financiers gain a five-year pipeline. How much materialises may depend on how quickly projects reach financial close and whether grid access keeps pace.
