Blaze reported at Russian steel site in Balakovo following drone strike claims

A fire broke out in Balakovo, in Russia's Saratov region, after reports of Ukrainian drone strikes near a major steel plant on Oct. 14. The regional governor said the attack damaged several buildings and killed one person, while the area also suffered power cuts. Separately, a fire at an oil-loading terminal in Rostov-on-Don was still burning for a fourth day after earlier drone strikes.
The blaze in Balakovo followed reports of Ukrainian drone activity in Saratov Oblast. Local authorities said multiple structures were hit, one person died, and electricity supplies were disrupted. The nearby steel works lists annual capacity above one million tons, though it was not confirmed whether the facility itself was struck.
In Rostov-on-Don, an oil-loading terminal continued burning for a fourth day after strikes four days earlier. Reports said eight of its twelve tanks were unusable by Oct. 13. The site exports petroleum products and supplies Russian forces, according to an independent outlet.
Residents in Balakovo and Rostov-on-Don may face immediate risks from fires, smoke, and power cuts, while workers at the steel and oil sites could see operations disrupted. If damage to energy infrastructure persists, export flows and local livelihoods may be affected, and communities could experience heightened anxiety as reports remain unverified. The broader war's toll on civilian infrastructure and essential services may continue to shape daily life in affected regions.
