Dutch battery tolling, German storage commissioning, and Chinese CO2 storage online

Vopak and Vattenfall signed a tolling deal for 100 MW/400 MWh at the planned Meeden battery site in the Netherlands, part of a 150 MW/600 MWh installation due online in 2028. Eco Stor started technical testing of its 103.5 MW/238 MWh battery in Schuby, Germany, after completing construction and grid connection. China Huadian has connected a 100 MW compressed carbon dioxide storage facility in Xinjiang to the grid.
Vopak’s Meeden site in Groningen is planned at 150 MW/600 MWh, with Vattenfall contracting 100 MW/400 MWh for trading and balancing. The full project is slated for commercial service in Q2 2028, and Vattenfall aims for at least 1.5 GW of contracted storage in key markets. Vopak bought 79% of Green Energy Storage in July.
Eco Stor’s Schuby plant in Schleswig-Holstein has finished construction and grid connection and is undergoing technical checks. Alpiq holds a tolling agreement from November 2025. China Huadian’s Xinjiang compressed CO2 facility began grid-connected operation on Sept. 30, 2026, with five gas chambers and expected 200 GWh annual output.

These projects could affect local communities, grid operators, and electricity consumers by adding flexible storage that may improve reliability and support more renewable integration. Traders and utilities may gain new balancing options, while nearby residents could see construction activity and land use changes. If commissioning proceeds as planned, the facilities may help shift power to higher-demand periods, potentially moderating price swings, though actual social benefits will depend on operations, market rules, and grid conditions.
