SpaceX speed cap disrupts Ukrainian Starlink use, Zelensky aide claims

A Ukrainian presidential adviser said SpaceX imposed an unannounced speed limit on Starlink terminals used by the military, affecting several missions. The restriction reportedly applies to the StarShield service package and caps speed at 100 miles per hour. A Defense Ministry source confirmed the limits and said the cause is under investigation, while the adviser linked the move to political tensions without offering evidence.
A Ukrainian presidential adviser, Serhii Beskrestnov, said on Oct. 14 that SpaceX had quietly capped Starlink terminal speeds for equipment in motion. He said the limit applied to the StarShield military package and set a maximum of 100 mph (160 km/h). A Defense Ministry source confirmed the limits were found and said investigators were still determining why they occurred.
Beskrestnov suggested a political motive, though he offered no proof. The Kyiv Independent reported days earlier that President Trump had threatened to withhold intelligence and other aid to shield Russian oil refineries. Another Ukrainian activist, Serhii Sternenko, also reported the restriction and speculated SpaceX acted at the Trump administration's request.
If the reported cap persists, Ukrainian units that depend on Starlink for drone control and battlefield communications could see missions slowed or disrupted. That may weaken Ukraine's ability to target Russian logistics, while also raising broader questions about reliance on private satellite networks during wartime. The episode could heighten public and military uncertainty over whether commercial services remain dependable amid shifting U.S.-Ukraine political tensions.
