Ukraine military updates Russian casualty toll

Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russia has suffered about 1,557,350 troop losses since Feb. 24, 2022, including 1,650 in the past day. The military also listed heavy losses of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, aircraft, and other equipment. Ukraine does not disclose its own casualty figures, while Western estimates indicate Russian losses are substantially higher than Ukraine's.
Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia’s cumulative troop losses since the February 2022 invasion have reached about 1,557,350, with 1,650 added in the previous day. Its tally also lists 12,414 tanks, 25,535 armored combat vehicles, 51,195 artillery systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, and two submarines, among other equipment.
Kyiv has kept its own casualty totals undisclosed for operational reasons. Western assessments cited in the report suggest Russian casualties far exceed Ukraine’s, with CSIS estimating a roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1 ratio. A January 2026 CSIS report placed Ukraine’s likely casualties at 500,000–600,000 through December 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed. Zelensky said in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, with many missing.
The reported figures may deepen public awareness of the war’s human cost, affecting soldiers, veterans, and families awaiting news of missing relatives. Continued casualty disclosures could shape debates over mobilization, support, and reconstruction, while uncertainty around both sides’ counts may limit their use as definitive measures.
