Bitcoin Clings to ETF Cost-Basis Support as Outflows Mount
Bitcoin is trading near $81,500, a level Glassnode describes as the average cost basis for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF investors, even after $746 million in recent withdrawals. The cryptocurrency has bounced from that zone twice, but Glassnode warns a sustained drop below it could open the way toward $77,500. Market observers say institutional buying around $80,000 may be helping create a firmer floor.
Bitcoin is hovering around $81,500, a threshold Glassnode ties to the average purchase price for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF holders. The level previously capped gains, including during a May advance, but recent bounces suggest it may now act as support.
Those rebounds occurred alongside $746 million in ETF withdrawals—$681 million last week and $65 million Monday. Glassnode says a durable close beneath $81,500 could shift focus to roughly $77,500, a broader market average. MEXC’s Vugar Usi Zade attributes possible $80,000 buying interest to institutional accumulation.
A sustained drop below the level tied to ETF investors’ average purchase price could affect retail and institutional investors holding Bitcoin through regulated funds, potentially deepening paper losses and cooling demand for crypto-linked products. If support holds, it may reinforce confidence that institutional buyers can cushion downturns. Broader society may feel these shifts indirectly through retirement or brokerage accounts, market sentiment, and the perceived legitimacy of digital assets.
