Standard Chartered Opens Direct Crypto Trading to Wealthy UAE Clients
Standard Chartered has begun letting eligible professional investors in the UAE buy and sell Bitcoin and Ether through their existing bank accounts. The bank handles custody and settlement internally via Zodia Markets, avoiding the need for separate crypto wallets or outside exchanges. The service, licensed by Dubai's VARA, expands Standard Chartered's digital-asset offerings and may be introduced in more markets.
Standard Chartered's new UAE service lets qualifying professional investors trade Bitcoin and Ether inside their current bank accounts. It is the bank's first direct crypto trading offer for affluent clients anywhere, and the company describes it as the first such service from an international bank in the UAE.
Custody and settlement run through a closed-loop setup using Zodia Markets, a platform supported by Standard Chartered's SC Ventures, so clients avoid separate wallets or outside exchanges. Dubai's VARA licensed it. The launch follows the bank's UK institutional spot trading and a September 3 UAE extension; it also already offers crypto ETFs, structured products and OTC derivatives. More markets are planned, though no timeline was given.
This move may make crypto exposure more accessible to wealthy UAE clients who already bank with Standard Chartered, potentially normalizing digital assets within traditional wealth management. It could also concentrate early benefits among affluent investors, while everyday customers remain outside the service. If other banks follow, custody and settlement standards might improve, but risks such as market volatility and regulatory changes may still affect participants. Broader societal effects will likely depend on whether access expands beyond professional investors.
