Apple Music's monochrome icon refresh draws criticism

Apple Music appears to have replaced its long-standing red eighth-note icon with a black-and-white design in an iOS 27.2 beta. The update also removes red accents from widgets and shifts in-app pink/red tones to blue, while introducing default, dark, clear, and tinted icon versions. Many users criticized the change as dull or unnecessary, though some welcomed the simpler look.
Apple Music’s red eighth-note icon, used for 13 years, has become a simpler black-and-white mark in iOS 27.2 beta 4. Dark mode reverses it, and Clear and tinted versions exist. The symbol tilts further left, has more oval note bases, and a faint shadow under the bar and notes.
Widgets lost their red, while in-app pink/red accents shifted to blue. The wider Apple Music wordmark is now bolder and all-lowercase, first appearing with London’s Apple Music Hall. Many users called the icon dull or unnecessary; some liked it. Since it is still beta, Apple could revise it, though it often sticks with design choices.
The redesign could affect Apple Music users who rely on visual cues to identify the app quickly, especially those with color-vision differences or low vision, though tinting and dark/clear variants may offset that. It may also influence how other tech brands treat familiar icons, as companies weigh freshness against nostalgia. For now, the impact is likely limited to aesthetic preference and brand loyalty rather than functionality.
