Ukraine detains teenager accused of registering Starlink terminals for Russian forces

Ukraine's Security Service detained an 18-year-old man in Kyiv who is suspected of working for Russia's FSB and trying to activate 148 Starlink terminals for Russian military use. Investigators said the devices were intended to help plan Russian operations in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, and that Ukrainian officers prevented their activation. The suspect allegedly used relatives' and acquaintances' passport details and was detained near a post office; he faces life imprisonment if convicted.
Investigators say the suspect, an 18-year-old former welding student in Kyiv, sought quick earnings through Telegram and was allegedly recruited by an FSB officer. He reportedly used relatives’ and acquaintances’ passport data to register 15 Starlink terminals, then prepared details for 133 more.
Officers detained him near a post office before further activations, and the 15 earlier registrations were disabled. He remains held without bail and faces a possible life sentence and asset seizure if convicted. Similar recent cases include a Rivne bus bomb plot suspect and Starlink registration cases in Kharkiv.
This case may deepen public caution around Telegram recruitment and quick-money offers, especially among students and young adults. Relatives and acquaintances whose passport details were allegedly misused could face identity checks or administrative complications. Security measures around satellite equipment and postal points may increase in Kyiv and frontline regions, potentially affecting ordinary users and businesses. The arrest could also reinforce scrutiny of collaboration networks, though its broader deterrent effect remains uncertain.
