New Apple TV 4K Brings Voice-Activated Siri and Smart Home Hub Duties
Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV 4K now includes built-in far-field microphones so users can summon Siri without the remote. The device adds Wi-Fi 7, Thread, improved Siri content awareness, and support for a four-speaker HomePod mini surround setup. It also serves as a smart home hub for controlling accessories and scenes, alongside entertainment and fitness features.
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K adds far-field microphones, so Siri can be summoned without the remote. Echo cancellation helps it hear commands while audio plays. It also brings Wi-Fi 7, Thread, and Siri that can show on-screen details about programs, including award results and similar titles.
A four-speaker setup using HomePod mini 2 units, or second-generation HomePods, can adjust timing and levels by position. The box also manages smart-home scenes, guest access, doorbell alerts, and local HomeKit Secure Video processing. Its A19 chip uses Secure Exclaves to isolate microphone data. Preorders start near $300.
This could make voice-first control more common in living rooms, affecting households already using Apple devices and smart-home accessories. It may reduce friction for older users or people with mobility limitations, while raising questions about microphone placement and privacy. Because many features depend on compatible iPhones, HomePods, and HomeKit gear, benefits may concentrate among Apple ecosystem users. Its hub role could deepen reliance on one platform for entertainment, fitness, calls, and home automation.
