LG Smart Lock With Apple Tech Adds UWB Entry but Limits Hands-Free Use

Apple and LG have introduced the LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, which can unlock automatically via Ultra-Wideband when a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch approaches. It also offers NFC, PIN, and physical key access, plus sensors that report whether the door is closed, open, ajar, or forced. While Matter and Aliro support allow use with Android platforms, the automatic proximity unlocking is mainly limited to Apple devices.
The lock joins Apple’s wider smart-home push, alongside a HomeView display and an Apple Home Collection. LG builds it, but it uses Apple’s interface and ecosystem without Apple branding. UWB lets a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch unlock hands-free as the owner approaches; NFC, PIN, and physical key entry remain available.
Door sensors can report closed, open, ajar, or forced states, sending alerts or sounding an alarm. Matter and Aliro support allow Android and platforms like Google Home and SmartThings, though UWB proximity unlocking mainly depends on Apple devices. Core access works locally without internet, and setup uses a Matter QR code in Apple Home.
This launch could make hands-free entry more familiar among iPhone owners, while Android users may gain basic smart-lock control but not the same proximity convenience. Households may benefit from door-state alerts and local operation during outages, yet reliance on Thread hubs and platform ecosystems could shape who adopts it. Privacy-sensitive users may welcome local processing and encryption, though convenience features still raise questions about access data and device compatibility.
