Romania Investigates Suspected Drone Strike on Black Sea Tanker

Romania is investigating a possible drone attack on a tanker off its Black Sea coast. Suspected Russian drones have struck several ships near Romania and Bulgaria in recent days, according to the report. The incidents are part of the Ukraine war's spillover into the Black Sea.
Romanian authorities responded to the Comoros-flagged Yara J near Sulina, close to Ukraine's border, after a fire broke out. The crew reportedly put out the flames before rescuers arrived. Defence Minister Radu Miruta said it remains unclear whether a drone caused the incident, and an inquiry is ongoing. He described the event as serious because it occurred in Romanian territorial waters.
Since the previous week, suspected Russian drones have targeted multiple vessels near Romania and Bulgaria, according to the report. The same live coverage noted Russian strikes on Ukraine's Izmail port and two cargo ships bound for Odesa, which Moscow said had military uses.
The incidents may heighten anxiety among residents and mariners along Romania's Black Sea coast, where shipping and port work support local livelihoods. If attacks continue, insurers and shipowners could reassess routes, potentially raising costs and disrupting trade. Border communities near Sulina and Izmail may face greater uncertainty, while authorities could come under pressure to strengthen maritime security and emergency response. The wider spillover may also affect regional energy and food shipments, though the full consequences remain unclear.
