Ukraine military reports 1.56 million Russian troop losses since invasion began

Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian forces have suffered 1,559,230 casualties since the full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, with 1,880 in the previous day. The same report listed heavy equipment losses, including 12,414 tanks, 51,233 artillery systems, and 443 aircraft. Ukraine does not publish its own casualty figures, while Western analysts estimate Russian losses are substantially higher than Ukraine's.
Ukraine’s General Staff said on Oct. 15 that Russian forces had sustained 1,559,230 casualties since the all-out war began, including 1,880 in the prior day. Its tally also listed 12,414 tanks, 51,233 artillery systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, and two submarines, among other losses.
Kyiv does not release its own casualty totals, citing concerns about operational security. Western assessments cited in the report indicate Russian losses far exceed Ukraine’s; CSIS estimated a ratio near 2.5:1 or 2:1 and projected 500,000–600,000 Ukrainian casualties through December 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed. Zelensky has said at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers died.
The reported figures may shape public understanding of the war’s human cost, affecting families of soldiers, veterans, and communities in both countries. Continued uncertainty around casualty counts could influence morale, media coverage, and public discussion, while independent estimates may help analysts assess the conflict’s toll. However, exact impact remains difficult to measure because Ukraine does not publish its own losses and verification is limited.
