Smiths News wins exclusive Telegraph distribution contract through 2036

Smiths News has signed a long-term agreement to become the exclusive wholesale distributor for Telegraph Media Group across Great Britain starting October 2027. The contract extends to September 2036 and expands Smiths News's national network. Together with other recent deals, Smiths News has secured about 61% of the national newspaper and magazine market.
Smiths News, described as the UK’s biggest news wholesaler, will take on exclusive wholesale distribution for Telegraph Media Group throughout Great Britain from October 2027. The arrangement runs until September 2036, giving the distributor longer-term visibility over volumes and supporting investment in service and operations.
The deal follows contracts announced in June and July 2026. Combined, five agreements give Smiths News roughly 61% of the national newspaper and magazine market once they begin. The Fed’s Hemanshu Patel said retailers need careful transition planning and that the category should remain affordable and profitable.

This consolidation may affect independent newsagents, delivery networks, publishers and readers. Retailers could face changes in supply terms, margins or service levels, while publishers may gain distribution certainty. Readers might see continued print availability, though local availability could vary if distribution arrangements shift. The long contract may support investment in logistics, but its social effect depends on whether small shops can adapt and remain viable.
