Leader Energy starts building 100 MW/400 MWh battery storage in Malaysia
Leader Energy Group Berhad has begun construction on a 100 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, with commissioning planned for 2027. The project is part of Malaysia's MyBeST bidding programme, which covers four grid-connected BESS projects totaling 400 MW/1,600 MWh. The programme is intended to reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants, lower system costs over time, and support a 2050 target of 70 per cent renewable energy capacity.
Leader Energy Group Berhad has begun work on a 100 MW/400 MWh battery storage site in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan. It is expected to be commissioned in 2027. The installation falls under MyBeST, which Malaysia’s Energy Commission oversees. MyBeST covers four grid-linked BESS projects, each 100 MW/400 MWh, giving 400 MW/1,600 MWh in total.
The effort is intended to lessen dependence on peaking plants that burn fossil fuels, bring down grid expenses over time, and assist in reaching a 2050 objective of 70 per cent renewable capacity. In July 2026, Leader Energy also held a groundbreaking for its 99 MWac Leader Solar Energy III project in Kedah, awarded through LSS5+, with operations planned for 2027.
The project may affect electricity users by helping the grid absorb more renewable power and potentially reducing reliance on peaking plants. Households and businesses could see steadier supply, while grid operators gain flexibility. Communities near Pajam may experience construction activity and land-use changes. Longer-term cost effects remain uncertain and may depend on how the programme is operated and how savings are passed through.
