Fluence selected for Vattenfall's 1 GWh battery storage project in Germany
Vattenfall has chosen Fluence Energy to deliver a 254 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage project in Brunsbüttel, Germany, on the site of a nuclear plant being decommissioned. Fluence will provide turnkey engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term service using its Gridstack Pro 5000 platform. Construction is expected to start in 2027, with commissioning and connection to the 50Hertz 380 kV network planned for late 2028.
The Brunsbüttel installation is designed to run for four hours at its rated 254 MW output, storing 1,000 MWh. Fluence's scope spans design, procurement, building, commissioning and ongoing service, using its Gridstack Pro 5000 product. The site previously hosted a nuclear station now being taken apart.
Vattenfall's storage pipeline extends beyond Germany: a September 2026 agreement with Return covers the 200 MW/800 MWh Sirius project in Winschoten, in the Dutch province of Groningen, with Huawei, Hanab and Omexom handling batteries, construction and installation.
Grid-scale storage at this site could help balance the 50Hertz grid as more variable wind and solar generation comes online, potentially reducing reliance on fossil-fired backup. Nearby communities, long tied to nuclear employment, may see construction and maintenance jobs, though the facility's footprint and grid connection could raise local land-use or visual concerns. Ratepayers might benefit if storage lowers peak-price volatility, but outcomes depend on market rules and how the project is operated over its lifetime.
