Greta Gerwig and Netflix Executive Reportedly Feuded Over Narnia Film

A report says Greta Gerwig and Netflix’s then-movies chief Dan Lin had a tense Zoom discussion about The Magician’s Nephew. Sources described Lin as dismissive toward the director, prompting other executives to smooth things over. Lin was later fired, but the report did not tie his departure to this dispute.
Variety reported that Dan Lin, then Netflix’s film chief, had a tense virtual meeting with Greta Gerwig about her adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew. Multiple Netflix executives attended; Lin was described as curt about the project’s progress. Bela Bajaria later contacted producer Amy Pascal, and agent Bryan Lourd raised the matter with Ted Sarandos.
Lin was later replaced on the film by Doug Belgrad, who was laid off last week. Variety said sources did not link Lin’s dismissal to the Gerwig episode. The movie is set for theaters Feb. 12, 2027, with IMAX previews Feb. 10, then Netflix Apr. 2; its cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.
The reported friction may draw more attention to how streaming studios manage high-profile directors and theatrical expectations. It could affect filmmakers weighing Netflix deals, especially those seeking cinema releases, and may shape how talent representatives escalate concerns. For audiences, the dispute is unlikely to change the film’s scheduled rollout, but it may influence perceptions of Netflix’s creative partnerships and the public conversation around director autonomy.
