Report Says Ilhan Omar’s Sister Cooperated With Federal Investigators
Federal investigators reportedly took Sahra Noor’s phone earlier this year to examine family text messages. Noor, who is Rep. Ilhan Omar’s sister, voluntarily spoke with federal authorities, according to the report.
Sahra Noor, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s older sister, reportedly met voluntarily with federal investigators after Homeland Security Investigations searched Omar’s home in an immigration-records inquiry. Earlier this year, agents took Noor’s phone to examine family messages; people cited by the New York Times said those messages helped authorities obtain judicial permission to search the residence.
Noor entered the U.S. as a young child with family fleeing Somalia’s civil war. She lives in Kenya and was in America for her book, Salt in the Snow; a Minnesota tour event was canceled and later described as occurring while she was questioned. The DOJ also subpoenaed relatives, and reporting reviewed emails about a birth-year change.
The report could intensify public scrutiny of immigration and citizenship records involving a sitting lawmaker and her family, affecting constituents, relatives, and federal agencies. It may also shape how media and voters assess transparency and due process, while legal outcomes remain uncertain. For immigrant families, high-profile probes could heighten concerns about privacy and documentation, though the facts and any charges are still unresolved.
