Apple TV update enables four-HomePod surround setups
Apple has issued release-candidate builds of iOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod Software 27.2. The update lets a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K treat up to four compatible HomePods as one surround system, with automatic room calibration. Supported setups include four HomePod mini 2 units, four second-generation HomePods, or a mix of two of each; older HomePods and earlier Apple TV models are excluded.
Apple’s release-candidate software—iOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod Software 27.2—prepares a four-speaker home-theater mode for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. The TV box manages compatible HomePods as a single surround group, and each speaker uses acoustic measurements to set timing and loudness automatically.
Supported combinations are four HomePod mini 2 units, four second-generation HomePods, or two of each. First-generation HomePod, original HomePod mini, and earlier Apple TV models are not included. Setup can run from Apple TV settings or an iPhone’s Apple TV remote app; public release is expected next week, with the new mini 2 and Apple TV 4K launching October 30 and November 13.
The feature could appeal to households already invested in Apple’s TV and speaker ecosystem, making multi-speaker surround setups simpler and more automatic. It may also encourage upgrades among owners of older HomePods or Apple TV models, since those devices are excluded. For others, the cost of four compatible speakers and a new Apple TV 4K may limit adoption, so the impact could remain concentrated among dedicated home-theater enthusiasts rather than broadly reshaping living-room audio.
