Netflix Ad Forecast Cut Drags Stock Lower as Revenue Growth Decelerates

Netflix shares fell about 6% after hours after the company lowered its 2026 advertising revenue forecast by $300 million and guided fourth-quarter profit below analyst estimates. The third-quarter profit beat was largely tied to expense timing, and the fourth-quarter outlook included layoff costs, though the full-year margin target was unchanged. Third-quarter revenue growth slowed to 11.8%, and the ad forecast cut reduced expected 2026 ad revenue to roughly $2.7 billion.
Netflix closed at $68.69 before falling roughly 6% after hours. The company reduced its 2026 ad revenue expectation to about $2.7 billion from roughly $3 billion, citing slower launches of certain advertising products. It also guided fourth-quarter net income to $2.79 billion, below the $3.07 billion analysts anticipated.
Third-quarter operating margin was 34.6%, versus a 33.2% forecast, with Netflix attributing the beat mainly to expense timing. The fourth-quarter margin outlook of 26.0% includes about $161 million, or 120 basis points, in layoff costs. Revenue growth slowed through the year to 11.8% in the third quarter.
The after-hours decline could affect retail and institutional investors holding Netflix shares, including pension and retirement portfolios. Layoff-related charges may signal workforce disruption for employees, while slower ad-product rollouts may limit choices for advertisers and viewers using ad-supported plans. Because Netflix remains a major streaming platform, its growth slowdown and ad strategy may influence how competitors and content partners plan spending, though the ultimate effects remain uncertain.
