Houthis Claim Strategic Mountain Capture in Taiz Offensive

The Houthis released footage claiming their fighters captured Jabal Han west of Taiz after an assault with artillery and tank fire. Saudi-backed forces reportedly withdrew from the mountain, leaving casualties and equipment behind. The mountain overlooks the al-Dhabab road and approaches to Taiz amid an intensified Houthi offensive.
Houthi military media issued video on 20 October 2026 that it presented as evidence of Jabal Han’s seizure west of Taiz. The clip reportedly shows artillery preparation, a T-62 tank firing, and fighters moving over rocky high ground; abandoned weapons and gear are also displayed.
The mountain sits above the al-Dhabab road, which links Taiz to Lahj and Aden, and overlooks western Taiz neighborhoods and the Old Airport area. Fighting has also been reported near al-Dhabab, Jabal Habashi, al-Misrakh and southern sectors, while the Taiz–Aden road was cut earlier this month.
The reported capture could affect civilians in Taiz and nearby districts by further constraining movement and supply routes, potentially raising prices and worsening access to food, fuel and medical care. Control of high ground and roads may shape military access and civilian safety, while continued fighting could displace families and strain local services. Aid and transport groups may face greater difficulty reaching affected areas; the broader impact remains uncertain and depends on how long the offensive and road closures last.
