Report suggests Xbox Project Helix may launch at up to $1,800

A new report claims Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix, is planned for a 2028 holiday launch and could be priced between $1,200 and $1,800. Microsoft has discussed high-end hardware and cost pressures from rising memory component prices. The report also says Xbox may overhaul Game Pass and release a handheld by the 2027 holiday season.
Fortune’s report says Microsoft is weighing a $1,200–$1,800 price range for Project Helix and might absorb some of that cost. The company has also reportedly planned a new handheld for the 2027 holiday period and a Game Pass revamp letting subscribers select paid features.
Executives have linked console pricing to soaring memory and storage expenses, partly driven by AI data-center demand. Xbox hardware has already become more expensive, and rivals Nintendo and Sony have also raised prices recently.
The reported price range could make high-end gaming hardware feel less accessible to households and casual players, while potentially reinforcing Xbox’s shift toward premium products and subscription choices. If such costs persist, players may delay upgrades, favor cheaper or handheld options, or compare value across platforms. Developers and retailers could also feel knock-on effects if fewer consoles sell, though Microsoft may offset this through subsidies or flexible Game Pass tiers.
