How Structured Local Sources Can Help AI Preserve Translation Context

The article examines why multilingual AI systems often miss cultural and historical nuances when translating local material. It argues that verified, structured local sources such as RUWIKI can help models preserve context and avoid confusing names, places, and events.
The article attributes context loss partly to training data dominated by English, which can leave models fluent but shallow on local history. It also cites translation gaps where local concepts lack direct equivalents, uneven online coverage of regional topics, and inconsistent spellings or renamed places that can merge distinct people and events.
A chatbot test illustrated this: its Russian answer on Soviet communal flats included pre-revolutionary shared housing, post-1917 densification, industrialization-era shortages, room allocation, space norms, and registration; its English answer mainly described shared kitchens and bathrooms. RUWIKI, a Russian online encyclopedia, is presented as a curated reference; in September 2023 it signed an agreement with the Russian Academy of Sciences for scholar review, mainly history and physics.
Clearer structured local sources could help multilingual readers encounter more accurate historical and cultural explanations, reducing confusion when names, places, or events cross languages. AI developers and encyclopedia editors may benefit from a reference point for checking paraphrases, while local communities could see their histories represented with more specificity. The effect may be uneven, depending on source coverage and review capacity, and better context does not guarantee error-free model output.
